Our lives revolve around horses. We work with horses and then spend our spare time doing horse related things.

Some of the subjects we cover are directly related to training horses…but others are a bit more indirect. Check out some of the blogs below to learn more about our lives, our values and what we have to offer you through encouragement and living by example.

Day 4: Bucket Feeding Foals-Milk Recipe

If you ever find yourself with an orphan foal for whatever reason you will need to be prepared to offer them the nutrition that they need. The two foals that I have were taught to drink from a bucket for several reasons. The first is that the foals like to drink small...

Day 3: Feeding and care of nurse mare foals

Adopting these two has been remarkably like bringing home a child. Expect them to sleep, wake, pee, poop, eat, sleep...repeat! Throw in some play time and it pretty much sums up the days for now.  Although it is fun, watching the foals right now is also critical. The...

Day 2: How did we pick the foals? What are their names?

I asked for your questions and many of you responded. It looks like the number one question was 'What made you choose these two babies?" It's a bit of a story...but I will try to make it shortish. From the first time I saw Last Chance Corral adopting went on my bucket...

Day 1: Bringing the nurse mare foals home

A quick blog, late at night, to update everyone on the foals... ...as of 3:15 this afternoon we officially loaded up our nurse mare foals and headed home! Both foals came with names that Last Chance Corral had given them. The little draft cross on the left with the...

When I die, I want my horses to….

How would you finish this sentence? Over the years I have had several concerned owners tell me their plans or ask for my advice...but in most cases I think that the issue goes largely undiscussed. About a month ago I met a man who had recently bought a very nice, very...

How do you pick where you’re going to live?

I’m simultaneously excited and exhausted. Excited because I’m finally making my big announcement in this blog (give me a minute) and exhausted because- the cold I caught in April turned into something resistant to amoxicillin- and then became pneumonia. Ok, but now...

Can losing your voice make you a better Horse Whisperer?

This quote keeps running through my mind as I have completely lost my voice. In one small way I have totally and thoroughly used up my body. It began three weekends ago when I spoke at the Midwest Horse Fair in Wisconsin, followed by speaking two weekends ago at the...

Almost ready for the tests to come.

As birthdays are a great time for reflecting…here goes. I’m 41 years old today. It is strange to think about it because I can very clearly remember my own mother at this same age. I can remember driving from Ohio to Maine to surprise her for her 40th birthday. I find...

Visiting…and riding…Roxy’s foal: Roxter

While I was in Germany last month I had the opportunity to visit, and ride, Roxy’s son Roxter. I was excited about the opportunity but the emotions did catch me off guard. As many of you know Roxy had four foals via embro transfer before she died; Chloe, Roxter, Mia...

Habits: 3 Points to Consider

When is the last time you stopped to consider your habits? Change is a great opportunity to consider your habits. We recently returned from a month long stay in Germany. It was a great trip and I could easily write several blogs about the horses seen, people met, and...

Doing dumb things with horses…on accident

When is the last time you did something you knew better than to do…but did it anyway? My answer is yesterday. Yesterday I stuck my finger into a horses mouth while his mouth was open. I know better than to do that. I know the proper way, and when, to reach into a...

Exercising to improve your riding

A few years ago I was a presenter at Equine Affaire in Massachusetts. At the end of the event my mom drove down from Maine and picked the boys and me up and took us to her house. Jesse drove the horses back to Ohio and stayed their for a...

Day 1 of Life on the road without Horses

Sixteen months ago we moved out of our house and began life on the road…with horses. Since that time we have traveled from coast to coast in our Fleetwood motorhome and our horses have been with us the entire time. Until now. Beginning today we are traveling without...

The mental habits we create in ourselves and our horses.

The filly entered the arena on edge, expecting to blow off energy. It didn't matter to her that she was saddled and bridled, blowing off energy during the first 10-15 minutes of a ride was normal. It was what she had done from the first ride. At this point it was part...

Confusing terms people use around horses.

During a lesson the other day I said, "soften up" to the rider as she rounded the turn...and she immediately picked up on the reins to 'soften' her horse. Houston, we have a problem. I had intended for the rider to 'soften' her hands, to offer the horse a reward but...

Old habits vs new habits: in horses and in people

Most of us are at least somewhat aware of our own habits. You probably recognize that you have a routine when getting ready for bed each night or the way you fold your cloths. We become especially aware of those habits if someone interrupts or changes them. Where did...

Side effect of snake bite on horse almost a year later.

Last year on June 16 we were dealing with our first snake bit horse. You may remember the blog, complete with photos, documenting the whole process. As Hope, the horse that was bitten, was hanging her head out of the stall yesterday I snapped this photo and decided to...

155th Anniversary of the Pony Express!

Most of us have a concept of the pony express: deliver letters on horseback...fast. But how much do you know? The pony express ended in California...did they start in 1) New York 2) Missouri 3) Texas How far they travel in 24 hours? 1) 100 miles 2) 250 miles 3) 500...

Name this foal: Newt has a little brother!

Newt has a little brother! He still needs a name, or two, a barn name and a registered name. He is by a stallion named Starlights Wrangler and his mom's name is Whizards Maggie Mae. Fun fact: Whizards Maggie Mae is a full sister to Whizards Baby Doll (aka...
